What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges.
What are the 5 different types of autism?
- Level 1 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), previously called Asperger’s Syndrome
- Rhett Syndrome, although this has been removed from the spectrum
- Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD)
- Kanner’s Syndrome or Classic Autistic Disorder
- Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).
Signs and Symptoms
People with ASD often have problems with social, emotional, and communication skills. They might repeat certain behaviors and might not want change in their daily activities.
- Delayed speech and language skills.
- Flat, robotic speaking voice, or singsong voice.
- Echolalia (repeating the same phrase over and over)
Treatment
There is currently no cure for ASD. The most effective treatments available today are applied behavioral analysis (ABA), occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and pharmacological therapy.
